I'm a HUGE fan of the Original Donner Films, and Chris Reeves-R.I.P. will ALWAYS be my SUPERMAN...SUPERMAN RETURNS was a travesty, but being a Supes fan I will admit to liking bits in that film and Routh was a dead ringer(no pun intended) to Chris...Having bought the BluRay ANTHOLOGY SET and FINALLY seeing the $10 million "Return to Krypton" Scene was sick, I loved every minute of it-I can't believe Singer had the balls to delete it...The New Film I have mixed feelings about...The Suit is kinda odd(not that the SR Suit wasn't-it had it's share of problems) with that Armadillo pattern and wires on his wrists and waist, he's a little short for my tastes(But film angles can fix that), but the more I see his face, I can see a new Superman in it.

I REALLY hope they've got a tight script and bring him back for a whole new audience to appreciate...well if anyone has any feelings on the matter, I made this Thread-feel free to have at it.

I registered with the "Star Trek: Into Darkness" sometime ago and now I am receiving endless email messages about how I need to tweet or retweet stuff about STID. Sometimes its unspecified as to why I should be retweeting, sometimes I am offered a chance to win Imax tickets for doing so.

"Prometheus" had a strong viral campaign that offered many different kind of puzzles to solve and additional information about character and story elements in the film. Many of those puzzles and clues turned out lead nowhere. Weyland Industries "training" videos and other viral videos are taken by some to have a fundamental meaning as to the interpretation of the film. I've seen some comments here that indicate the film was sort of an addendum to the things on the viral site.

Whats going on here? It seems like the marketing effort on the part of the distributors and studios is overtaking the content and meaning of films that they are trying to sell. Is this just limited to a small fraction of the film audience that are online fans or does it spread out significantly from those individuals in the general audience. I can see the point of the marketing efforts to sell the films but at this point it seems to be a danger that can destroy the filmmakers intentions and the artistic merits that can be found in the films alone.

The Strange Fate of Actors

I watch a lot of cult classics with actors who gave great performances, only to disappear forever. Can you think of any?

For example... Jenny Wright, in Near Dark; or Louis Tripp in the Gate (1 and 2); or Shelly Duvall in the Shinning. These people give us some memorable roles, only to disappear, never to really be heard from again. Just watch the making-of documentary to Near Dark, where Adrian Pasdar speaks to the screen during his interview, speaking to Jenny and asking her where she is and that he'd like to speak to her again (honestly, can you blame him?), and this was many years after Near Dark was first made! It felt kind of chilling to me that someone like her could just drop off the face of the earth so completely. It certainly adds to the feel of the performance, in retrospect, almost like watching a ghost, onscreen. Brandon Lee was shot on the set of the Crow and died on the operating table, and watching his finale performance know that it's his last lends it a certain gravitas. Or Elizabeth
Hartman, in the Secret of NIMH.

About her: I was looking up David Carradine so I could spell his
name, and Google brought up John Carradine, who, evidently is a very famous
actor who's been in a lot of horror movies. I felt surprised I've never really
heard of him, but he was in several movies that I have seen. One of them
was The Secret of NIMH, where he voiced the Great Owl. Out of
curiosity, I looked up several other members of the cast, including the
voice of the female lead, Mrs. Brisby, who was played by Elizabeth
Hartman.

Wikipedia had this to say about Hartman:

Throughout much of her life, Hartman suffered from depression.[9] In her later years, her mental health continued to decline and she moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
to be closer to her family. In 1984, she divorced her husband,
screenwriter Gill Dennis, after a five-year separation. In the last few
years of her life, she gave up acting altogether and worked at a museum
in Pittsburgh while receiving treatment for her condition at an
outpatient clinic.

On June 10, 1987, Hartman committed suicide by jumping from the window of her fifth floor apartment.[9] Earlier that morning, she had reportedly called her psychiatrist saying that she felt down.[10] Hartman was subsequently buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in her home town.[11]
I used to love that movie. Going to be kind of weird if I ever watch it again.

Maria Falconetti gave her first and only performance in the Passion of Joan of Arc. It's like watching someone die -- the finality of it, knowing that they'd never go on to bigger and better things. Very much the same feeling I get when I listen to Blizzard of Oz or Diary of a Madman (Randy Rhodes died in a completely avoidable plane crash), or Jaco Pastorious's self-titled debut (murdered by a New York bouncer). It makes you wonder what could've been, but you can help but marvel at what they left behind.
