The Future of Gaming! - Identity Crisys

I feel almost obligated to create this thread, in light of the most recent developments in gaming and the things that are being aimed for.
You see when gaming started as a trend, no one was "gaming" for a storyline or completing a challenge. People were gaming for highscores in Pong.

However as the technology was developed games started venturing into interesting territories. Final Fantasy had narrative, Mario had fast paced gameplay, Civilization was a real time sink with so much to learn from.

And as i reach this present year of 2013, i notice something quite catastrophic has happened to games. Which is a loss of identity.

The technology has now caught up with the potential to create believable characters, but with these more believable characters, came a trend. A terrible trend. That to copy movies.

I sense gaming is now trying to go for "interactive movie" approaches, which never favors the games being made, because they copy plots from already cheesy plot points from past movies.

Want an example of this? Here it's how it used to be:

Do you notice a sense of being in a new environment? Do you sense yourself immersed and actually deeply involved in the action?

Do you feel that the game actually demands an effort from you?

BUt here's an example of an actually good game, but a modernized game by these standards:

We saw this already, it's Indiana Jones. It's a fun game and a good looking game, but it's mostly linear and straight forward while not asking for anything complex to complete the storyline and worse, it's also very cliched for something that shouldn't be cliched.

Movies have done this to death, videogames should be free from these mistakes. But you have no control in the action.

No decision making.

While it's not as dramatic as i may make it sound, it's still something worth discussing about.

Games like Mass Effect, Bioshock, the earlier resident evil's, they create a world around you, so you can immerse yourself in. Everything you do has real consequences. And there is no "cinematic" component, it's "gaming" components added to them.

While games like god of war and uncharted, good games, games i personally enjoy, drag you through a linear path, do not present you food for thought and in fact present cliched movie stereotypes. Indiana jones and 300 to throw in some examples.

So this is basically what i wanted to get to.

David Cage (rejected from hollywood), responsible for Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls, says that games can never reach emotion to players if they aren't showing people that are rendered well enough and realistic looking, that can only be achieved further down the line. With more Polygons.

My response is that it's bullshit. My favorite gaming characters, have absolutely, no human likeliness or movement.

Glados, Wheatley from Portal, Andrew Ryan from Bioshock (a voice through a radio), Mario...

YOu actually have more things from Mr Cage telling gaming to "grow up".

Which i believe is him trying to make more "interactive movies", which i do not agree upon.

Mr Cage's---growing up speech here.

I wanted to know your opinion.

Can gaming create it's own identity apart from that "thing that looks like a movie".

I believe it does.

Literature first set emotions through our imagination.

Movies did it through our direct exposure to the scenes.

Gaming....i believe gaming isn't necessarily about characters, script or plot (while they can be), it's about reaction to interaction with other stuff.

Portal as an example of interaction with robots and not humans.

Please share some thought's i'd really like to know!

I love video game remixes. My friend introduced me to them; as we were driving on the highway back and forth to Ann Arbor, he'd pop his Minibosses CD in and we'd jam out to Megaman 2 and Contra and so forth. I've played video games since I was four and have always had a special place in my heart for the original chip tunes, but remixes are a lot of fun and make the old feel new.

Metroid Metal: I love me some Metroid. The series has great music and is even better since it's influenced so heavily by Alien. All the music here is available for free. Check it out.

VGmix: This site used to be around back in the day. It's back up now as VGmix4 and you can submit video game remixes there, if you're feeling brave. OCremix has been around perhaps as long, but I always liked VGmix, more.

VGmix4.

An archive of the old VGmix music.

Minibosses: The guys that started it all. I love their old stuff, because it's so raw sounding. Their Brass albums aren't by any means bad, but a little too polished for me.

Goat: This guy remixed a ton of Castlevania music, but mainly CV3.
I grew up playing Gargoyle's Quest (featuring that Red Demon from Ghost and Goblins, known as Firebrand/Red Arremer, as the playable character) on the Gameboy, and even to this day it remains an amazing game. It was one of the earliest Gameboy games, and I can't believe how good the graphics are.

Then yeeeeears later, when I got a SNES emulator, I found out about Demon's Crest, which features the same character. The game's drenched in an awesome gothic style and incorporates a lot of Megaman X type of upgrades.

So, to pay respects to my childhood, I composed a suite of several different themes that are played during both games. It's still a demo (no real drums/strings yet), but I'm happy with the results. Re-composing it all by ear was a pain in the arse, but fun nontheless.

Give it a listen, would you kindly?
Until Bioshock: Infinite came out and I watched the Ken Levine
interviews, I had no idea that he and his team worked on System Shock 2.
Evidently this game is a masterpiece, but I never really heard about it
until I played Mass Effect 3 and someone complained about the ending of
that game basically being ripped off of SS2. Read about the game and
it's considered a masterpiece by many. I grew up playing a lot of games
that are now considered classics (many of them featured on GOG). Always
nice to learn about one.

Tried playing it vanilla, but ran into
some trouble with the graphics. Figured, with such a popular game, it
probably has its share of modders (ever since DOOM 3 first came out,
I've been a sucker for modding games; any chance I get to do so I take).
Sure enough, I learned very quickly that it does. It was as simple as
following the instructions on this page: the SS2 Newbie Modding Guide.

Aside
from that, the game seems really cool. It's hard as hell and has a
pretty steep learning curve. Playing it on Impossible and it mades
Bioshock: Infinite on 1999 mode feel like a cakewalk. Seriously. Look
forward to playing it more. Better yet, it'll run on XP, Vista, 7 or 8,
so I can play this on my crappy laptop at work. : )

GOG is a
great site where you can buy awesome classic games for cheap. I already
own Myst, Riven (I'll beat them, someday, I swear), SS2, Dungeon Keeper 1
and 2, Star Control 1 and 2, Master of Orion 1 and 2, Master of Magic;
but I plan on getting Thief 2, Carmageddon, Total Annihilation, and
Syndicate. I could own all of them for about 50-60 bucks. Enough gameage
to keep me busy for a long time for the price of what I paid for BS:I.

Have
any of you guys tried SS2? Fond memories or tips for a beginner? I want
to play on hard, but am not sure, given how tough it is.

Wondering how many of you guys play Battlefield 3 as I am looking for some pointers on the game and possibly thinking about switching over to the franchise from Call of Duty. While I wouldn't call myself a Call of Duty fanboy, I have enjoyed the campaigns on the last few games quite a bit. The campaign in Modern Warfare 2 and 3, as well as Black Ops was awesome. My biggest problem though stems from the multi-player. I thought multi-player was decent on MW2 until it became a hack fest, and Black Ops was garbage, in my opinion. Modern Warfare 3 seemed like it would be a big improvement but nearly a year after release the game is bogged down with horrible lag and if you have a good connection like me(30-60 ping up to 2000 miles from my house, 13 up/10 down) you get punished big time in game from their lag compensation software. Black Ops 2 is coming out next week and I am going to wait and see how my friends find the game before I decide to check it out.

That having been said a guy at work used to be a big CoD fan and switched to Battlefield and never looked back. He said the game is far superior in terms of game play, though it is a slower paced game and more team based, which is honestly something I would welcome given the "me me me" attitude of most COD players even in objective game modes, all they care about is their padded k/d stats from camping, they don't care about capping flags or grabbing tags. The vehciles seem to add a really cool element though I'm not sure about the "class" system where you play a certain role. Would appreciate any comments or info from any of you that have played. I also have heard the lag is not that big of an issue with BF3 due to the dedicated servers.
