I've looked around the forum a bit and found some threads that ask people what there favourite horror movies are and recommendations and i have also had discussions across various threads as to what makes a film scary.

So my question is this, what scares you? What kind of horror movies do you like and why? What in terms of story or technique gets you, is it psychological horror like the silence of the lambs?, supernatural horror like paranormal activity, poltergeist, the exorcist? more violent horror like the hostel movies, found footage movie's like blair witch.

This isn't a thread for bashing horror movies either just a thread for people to discuss what scares them in a movie and why, so if you were making a horror movie what kind of film would it be, would it be more like texas chainsaw or would it be more like dracula. I think it would be cool to have a general discussion about what scares people or keeps them on the edge of there seat. You don't even have to name a movie you like it's more of a what conventions work. For instance i have heard people say alien and the descent is claustrophobic etc.

I would just like to get a good idea of what for you makes a perfect scary movie, also if you want discuss where you think or feel movies fail, like with alien people say it is good that he didn't reveal to much of the monster whereas in alien 3 i have heard people complain about the cgi etc.

Unfortunately for me i'm very unmoved by horror films, i don't find them scary for whatever reason so i'm interested as to why they work for you?, which also in a way plays into the whole suspension of disbelief thread that pritzker made.

Well, how do I begin? OK, first off, I believe in aliens & UFOs for a very long time I have had experiences witnessing UFOs. Below is My sightings. I have called MUFON and they were no help and the investigate I had, she looked for further info but then she said she has better cases to do. I called S.E.T.I. and they don't see anything. I called NASA a few times and they never can confirm what I have seen. I ask do you have or anybody have satellites or space stations up there that is visible from My area an they said no, we have nothing there and no did we see anything on our radar and so on. Well, I always feel alone. The MUFON message board was no help either and I thought maybe you guys here would have an interest and maybe actually have seen the same ones or sightings that is similar like Mine or even more significant?

I hope you guys believe Me cuz I ain't joking around here, I am not one to joke around and make up stories. My sightings below is the honest truth. They are what I posted to MUFON and talked about to others with a couple recent ones that I didn't waste My time reporting to them or anyone because I feel it will be the same old answer. Please read it and see what you think and reply with you explanations or experiences, thanks!

----------------------------------------------------

PREVIOUS SIGHTINGS & INFORMATION

I saw this UFO on August the 30th, 2008 at 2:15 in the AM CST in St. Louis. It appeared to be just a plane with regular lights and such so I wasn't excited about it at first. It was high up like the vapor-trail jets. Then several seconds later all of a sudden it changed. From regular blinking lights to one big bright light that resemble like a planet. It was traveling slow and then it transformed again into fading lights which appeared to be fading in and out which seemed like it was flying even higher. When it was further down south a shooting star-like object shot next to it. Shooting stars can't control their speeds but this one did. It was going slow and then it hurried up and zoomed off! I'm not sure what that was but I think that the one that transformed was a hybrid ship being built at Area 51 with alien technology but flown by humans. This craft made no sound at all and I saw it for a couple minutes. I am now aware to looked at even what appears to be regular Earth air vehicals as this really fooled Me! Did anyone else see this activity at the same time or date I did? Let Me know!

-----------------------------------------------

This happen on August 25th, 2008 around 9:30 PM Central Time in Saint Louis. I'm a usual stargazer as I love to look at the sky and admire its beauty in our front yard. I have had UFO experiences previously so I also go outside to see if I can see any activity up in the sky. (Please read below for more!). I saw this star-like UFO traveling North West. It was extremely high up. It seemed hundreds if not thousands of feet above the atmosphere. It has no blinking lights as it looked like a star. It was traveling straight and slow and then it slowly disappeared because of the streetlight. When I saw it I was excited and had My eyes on it for most of the time and I knew it wasn't a plane and then with further observing I knew it wasn't any earth vehicle or satellite, it was one of them! This happen on August 11th, 2008 around 9:30 PM Central Time in Saint Louis. I'm a usual stargazer as I love to look at the sky and admire its beauty in our front yard. I have had UFO experiences previously and I also go outside to see if I can see any activity up in the sky. (Please read below for more!). I saw this star-like UFO traveling down south. It was extremely high up. It seemed hundreds of feet above the atmosphere. It has no blinking lights as it looked like a planet. It was traveling straight and slow and then it slowly disappeared which appeared the object had cloaked. When I saw it I was excited and had My eyes on it for most of the time and I thought is that a plane and then with further observing I knew it wasn't any earth vehicle or satellite. I have had many experiences like this in the past since 2001. I have seen several like this one this year. I seen a ginormous UFO a few weeks prior which appeared to be as big as Jupiter traveling north which behaved like the one I saw on the 11th. I have seen these behave different in many ways. I have seen them travel back and forth, and cloak and uncloak like a peek-a-boo or a now you see Me, now you don't game. I have recently seen one that was going down east which the entire object was flashing but it was a very slow flashing characteristic. Now, I have seen two that were not like these a couple years ago. These were on two separate days. They both were extremely high but had a very unusual red flashing characteristic and the one went into hyperspace or warp speed like you see in the Star Wars and Star Trek films. That was incredible to witness! I believe these red ones are man made but has alien technology. I have been wondering so long what these are and who/what might be piloting them. It is a wonderful but creepy feeling that I get when I see these objects because I wonder are they the grays, the insectoids or something that we know absolutely nothing about or all of these different species. By seeing these UFOs I know that We are not alone!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, My name is Brandon. Well, I believe in UFOs, Aliens and other life on other planets and have since I was little. I have had My experience of UFO sightings over the last 11 years and usually they are the same but sometimes their more significant than others. I have posted several times to MUFON and one investigator gave up and couldn't help Me. I want to know if anybody had the same experience and can help Me out here. Please carefully ready below!OK, this was only a matter of hours ago in between 4:15 and 4:30 AM CST Tuesday Morning on 5/22/12. I was outside getting some air looking around in the street when I saw a huge glowing orb about the size of Jupiter in space. It was that color as well. It was moving very fast but at a slow pace from South to North going toward Downtown St. Louis. I followed it till I couldn't see it anymore as it went behind the trees. A minute later I saw another one coming from and going to the same direction but it seemed way higher. Then about a couple minutes after that I saw the unbelievable. I saw four (4) more UFOs coming from the same area but these were different. They were traveling together in a group and pulsating then cloaking then reappearing. After that I was so excited and stopped looking because it was getting daylight. I did not film them nor take pics.I know they weren't airplanes or helicopters because they were too high and didn't have sound and I'm quite sure they were not satellites. So I want to know did anybody else see anything like this at the same time I did in Missouri possibly Downtown because that's where they were heading or anybody see these ships before? I have seen one similar like them before just not that many at one time though. Again, I asked MUFON to help before but they can't help. Any help from you guys will be appreciated!

--------------------------

Guys, It was unreal on Thursday morning about 1:30 AM. Since I saw those last week I have been going out to see what's going on out there cause that was so cool and freaky. At about 1:30 AM Thursday I saw one coming North going South. It did very different behavior than the others. It was going about the same speeds as the other but then it slowed down, turned a bit then pulsated, got brighter and stayed stationary acting as it was a planet!I called MUFON and NASA about this to see if there was anything going one that was strange and foreign or if it couldn't have been a satellite but I serious don't that but as usual nobody knows anything about it so they couldn't help Me much. I not waiting for a phone call from them soon.So did anybody see this anywhere in MO or the rest of the US?I tell ya, we better watch out, something is going on up there and I wanna know what it is!By the way, I saw one disappear to the East and a red one near the Moon South West a few days prior! I'm not joking people!

-------------------------

On Halloween, 2012, I saw one about 6:15 AM going East to West, it was the usual bright orb but a smaller one.

Back in Jan, 2013 I saw a Jupiter sized UFO going West to East about 6:30 AM just just moving slow and have no characteristic beside just floating/flying and staying bright. I watched till I couldn't follow it anymore.

On 5/15/13, I saw a small one that was like the others like an orb but quickly cloaked/disappeared North East

So how much cyber warfare and propaganda is happening?

Studios posting fake positive light user reviews, manufacturers posting fake product reviews, politicians/groups with fake banter, fake quotes in news from sources that must remain anonymous cuz they don't fucking exist.

I can see it with movie and tv torrents too. I bet rival studios are buying legit dvds and offering them up as torrents to cut into competitors' bottom line. This may or may not be even more prevalent in the porn industry.

There really is no way to tell what is real on the net.
Hell, there could be a program artificially creating millions of fake chatter just to sway public opinion and behaviour.

I can see this potentially coming full circle and having emphasis and credibility shift back to word of mouth only.

Screw tv and the internet.

In the past I woulda just eaten it up with a spoon and moved on. Now I am scouring blogs and reviews to see if other ppl dislike the story.

Now I'm reading plot spoilers for star trek, man of steel, and other upcoming films, and I feel I should stop lest I reduce my enjoyment of those films too.

I read the spoiler for Iron Man and I regret it. But even without spoilers, is it sorta bad to look back on a film and criticize things?

So as not to take the competition announcment entirely OT, I thought it best to start a thread for this.

I have been researching how scripts should be written a fair bit lately and am interested in the opinions of others who have tried/are trying.

The 'professional' scripts I have read are both Prometheus scripts, The Thing and Alien. In all of these scripts certain technical details seem to be handled differently.

A tool like CeltX does a wonderful job of formatting but does not assist with the specifics of script writing style.

I have read some articles, such as

http://thebitterscriptreader.blogspot.com.au/2009/08/when-to-capitalize-and-underline.html

http://scripped.com/help/nav/_screenplay_basics

The elements I can not seem to find definate resolution on are CAPITALS and underlines.

I remember reading something in Lindy's Prometheus script like Shaw has to COWBOY THE FUCK UP but everything I have read on script writing says that character emotions should only be in (parenthesis) before dialogue and never shown as action. Action can only be used for just that, a physical, visual or audio action that can occur on screen.

Things I think should be in capitals are the full name of a character, FX creation or major prop (only the first time it appears in the screenplay). Many sites and forums suggest not using capitals on repeated use for ease of reading.

The Thing screenplay reads very much like this - correct sentence structure, minimal capital or underline use. But the Thing screenplay was written in the 80s - have things changed?

Also, what is the rule on camera or scene directions - some opinions seem to be include them, others seem to be just tell a story and leave that to the director/camera operators.

Is it as simple as character intros, important sounds and transitions are in capitals and underlines are just to highlight an important word in dialogue or action?

Anyways, thought it would be interesting to have this discussion - I'll see if anyone else thinks the same:)

(yes i write when drunk but mostly to ex GF's)

What inspired me is when I was 8 years old. My dad told me this one story that i loved and kept asking him to tell me. He got annoyed so told me to write it down and read it to myself. I did exactly that. Ever since I've been writing my own stories. When i was a teenager i use to watch really bad VERY BAD films and then write a script for it, something like a remake, fixing bad ideas and making it better.
I have always wanted to get into the writing business, screenwriting that is. Even had a stint with Channel 4 and wrote 3 episodes for a really bad programme named Hollyoaks. The money was good but i didnt like it and they didnt want to read my own original material so they got rid of me.

how about you?

Many used the old scifi tropes of spaceships and futuristic cities but the tropes were used much as a given. It was not so much the gee-whiz of futuristic technology but what effect they had on men and by extension on civilization. Bradbury's stories are of a more fantastical and nostalgic nature. EE Smith could be said to be more of a "hard" science fiction writer. Asimov wasn't so interested in expanding on the marvels of robots but rather what were the ramifications of the three laws on human/robotic interaction and how the three laws could be circumvented. These stories of course had a major effect and contributions to the films that came later; the B-movies of the 50s and on more contemporary scifi films. Lumping everything that has a spaceship or a person wearing a spacesuit with being "Golden Age" regardless of the date created runs the risk of diluting the meaning of the term to its being pointless and just becoming identical with the overall term "Science Fiction". Anyway, besides possible discussion of the definition of the term itself, the floor is open to discussing the specific authors mentioned in the Wikipedia entry, additional influences the authors/stories from that time period have had on more recent stories/books/movies, etc
