What exactly does it mean to seed life in the Prometheus universe?

Here is one possibility;
- Ancient engineers seeded life by planting single celled organisms on habitable planets
- Single cells are based on "engineer" home world life supporting a single body plan and a limited set of evolutionarily stable species (human/engineer life being the inevitable goal of that evolution)
- Sacrifice is required for seeding to pass on the soul (assumed some kind of extradimensional property/process of nature)
[- 4 billion years later the old and pragmatic Engineers decide to abort the universal project of their predecessors before it gets out of hand (it threatens the "god head")
- Earth life was targeted for destruction (along with all other sites) - perhaps there was another planet that had already spiralled out of control, and they weren't willing to take second chances
- Some remaining zealots try to warn the humans of LV223 and attempt to accelerate their social evolution
- There is perhaps some final war "in heaven" in which forbidden atomics were used, and in which the angels lost interest In their biological weapons programme]

Less ECUs.

- A lot of things happen off-screen. Your imagination will have to work harder.

- Little audio tricks.

- Nearly all of Streitenfeld's score has been removed (I felt certain things worked better in silence/alternate music).

- New music (for a complete list, see below).

- Holloway is less of a dick.

- Milburn is much less obnoxious and flamboyant.

- Stupid decisions either happen less or are less center stage.

- Less ambiguity (note: less, not none).

- Weyland is more evil.

- New sound effects.

- Alternate ending.

- Overlapping dialogue.

- New opening credits sequence.

- Altered color scheme.

- Alternate/extended/deleted scenes* included:

- Final Battle

- We're Not Alone

- Holloway Hungover

- Paradise

- 'Tis the Season

- David's Objective

- A King Has His Reign

- The Engineer Speaks

*Like the theatrical footage, these scenes have been edited and are not in their original forms.

Specific changes (subject to change):

- The scene at the beginning with the Sacrifice Engineer has been removed.

- The scene at the Isle of Sky has been removed. The movie starts in space.

- The exploding head scene has been trimmed. They remove the helmet and
find the head, but do not stick it with a needle. The head does not
explode.

- The dream sequence has been removed.

- The mutiny prior to the destruction of the Prometheus is told entirely
from Vicker's perspective. Any shots with Janek, Ravel or Chance after
Vickers runs to the escape pod have been removed: Realizing that there's
no time for debate, Janek quickly makes up his mind. He tells Vickers
she has 40 seconds to get to the escape pod. As she runs out of the
room, he shouts after her that he's going to eject the lifeboat onto
LV-223. Everything after that is Vickers. The last shot of the
Prometheus, however, is Janek shouting his famous last words: "Hands
up(off?)"

- The scene where Janek and Vickers flirt has been removed.

- Anytime that Vickers says "What the hell [insert situation, here]?" has been removed (about 5-6 times).

- Holloway saying "They're making you guys pretty close, huh?" and David's response "Not too close, I hope" have been removed.

- Shaw and Janek's conversation before Shaw leaves for the temple has been removed.

- Any dialogue involving Shaw or Holloway's Creation theory about the
Engineers has been removed; instead, they discover that the Engineers
created us after taking a biopsy from the severed head.

- The Orrery scene, as much as I like it, has been removed. Also, David
exploring the cargo hold has been removed: He opens the door and the
P.U.P. flies towards the screen, but we are not shown what's inside; the
next time we see David, he's standing at the control node in the Orrey.
He looks at the chair but does not sit in it. Cut to him standing on
the platform.

- The sandstorm sequence has been removed. Any dialogue suggesting that
Shaw had her accident outside of the ship has been removed.

- The scene where Ford and Shaw discover that the alien's DNA matches
our own has been removed; instead, she announces her discovery to
Holloway when he brings her the rose.

- The landing sequence has been shortened and features much less
dialogue: Holloway does not tell Janek where to land, lending the
impression that they already know where the temple is.

- The close up of David approaching the pool hall (after the 1st person
shot) has been removed. As a result, we're not sure who's sneaking up
on Holloway until David's voice tells us it's him.

- Shots of David's severed head during the Space Jockey scene have been
removed; he doesn't warn Shaw that the Engineer is coming and doesn't
speak to her or appear again in the film until after Shaw escapes the
Life Boat and the Engineer is subdued by the trilobite.

- The separate 1st person shots of David approaching the PUP waiting at
the door to the Juggernaut's cargo hold have been combined into a
single take.

- When David starts the recording of Weyland, the camera is facing the
audience sitting in their chairs; we can only hear the hologram
activating. Cut to Weyland standing in the room, on Mars (or wherever he
is); the hologram is completely activated.

- Holloway pushes the button on top of the Rubik's cube, but we do not see it open.

- Janek is not showing watching the pyramid scan until after he startles
Fifield and Milburn, who are busy inspecting the pile of "gigantic dead
bodies." This way, the jump scare actually works.

- Audio from Shaw and David's "Paradise" discussion is used as a voice over as she's driving towards the wrecked Juggernaut.

- Alternate ending.

- Vickers does not greet the employees at the start of the presentation.

- Vickers doesn't say "cheers" to Holloway and Shaw during their "quick word."

- Vickers doesn't order David to patch his video feed into her room, nor
does she know what he's up to in the temple. She is on deck with the
pilots when Holloway collapses, when David is in the Orrery.

- Fifield does not say that he is a geologist.

- Fifield does not say "Listen, no offense..." to Milburn. He flat out tells the guy that he's not his friend.

- Fifield does not say "What do you mean them?" when they find the
decapitated Engineer. Instead, he merely chuckles (and then leaves);
Shaw does not try to stop him or Milburn.

- Fifield doesn't ask why they didn't bring any weapons.

- Fifield does not howl.

- David does not say "sorry" for opening the ampule room door.

- David is not shown smuggling the ampule on board the Prometheus; we
see him with it for the first time when he opens it to spike Holloway's
drink.

- Milburn does not crack his "Maybe it's Martian piss" joke.

- Milburn doesn't say "Glitch, life form, what the fuck!"

- Milburn doesn't mention "three hundred years of Darwinism" during the briefing. He merely laughs at Shaw's Engineer theory.

- Shaw does not attack Ford and the other man in order to escape. She is
left unattended and runs out of the room during Fifield's attack on the
ship, when everyone is understandably preoccupied.

- Shaw doesn't proceed to get drunk on the life boat.

- Shaw doesn't free the Trilobite; it forces the door open to save her.

- Shaw doesn't forbid weapons.

- Shaw doesn't put on Holloway's ring.

- Shaw doesn't realize that Holloway's sick until he collapses onto the
ampule room floor. The footage of him tripping has been cut.

- Shaw doesn't say "After you" to Holloway before entering the temple. Instead, he says "After you" to her and she goes inside.

- Janek comments to Shaw about the nature of the black goo, but does not mention "weapons of mass destruction."

- Janek doesn't say "Well, I'll be damned!" when watching the P.U.P.S. scan the pyramid.

- Janek doesn't say "I thought that's why you people hired me" to Vickers.

- Janek doesn't say "What the hell is going on down there?" when Fifield begins his attack on the ship.

- Jackson is much quicker on the draw.

- Jackson screams "No!" as he shoots the Engineer in the chest.

- Jackson takes aim at the Engineer for his second shot. Cut to Shaw
running down the tunnel. Cue sound effect of shotgun firing. We later
find out he missed when we cut to the Engineer man-handling him.

- Ravel and Chance make their bet before the presentation, but it is not mentioned again in the film.

- Holloway doesn't comment about the pyramid being "just another tomb."

- Holloway doesn't mention it being Christmas and wanting to open his presents.

- Holloway doesn't say "Boy, you're coming with us."

- Holloway does not make his "small step for Mankind" wisecrack.

- Holloway doesn't say "Ellie, we're here, baby" to Shaw.

- The Trilobite is shown to be missing after Shaw looks through the Med
Bay door. However, the creature is not revealed until it attacks the
Engineer.

- The Trilobite face-rapes the Engineer directly after opening the door.
The rape itself happens off screen, but we can hear it as Shaw runs for
the exit.

- Ford does not say "Jesus!" before commenting about how the sunlight is heating the water.

- and much more!

List of new music.

Music is borrowed from famous horror films, including:

- Halloween ("Lights Out," "1963," "The Haunted House," "the Hangar")

- Halloween 3: Season of the Witch (main theme, "Chariots of Pumpkins")

- The Fly (Cronenberg version) ("Baboon Teleportation")

- Psycho (main theme)

- the Exorcist ("Night of the Electric Insects")

- Alien ("The Derelict/Space Jockey," "Catnip," "Here, Kitty," excerpt from "Alternate takes")

- Freud ("Soundtrack Suite, part 1")

- The Thing ("Humanity, part 2", "Wait")

- Forbidden Planet ("Main titles/overture", "The Landing", "Ancient Krell Music", "Giant Footprints in the Sand" and

"Battle with the Invisible Monster")

- The Monster Squad ("The Monster Squad suite")

- and the Terminator ("Gun Shop & Reese in the Alley", "Factory
Chase," "Future Remembered", "Escape From Police Station", and
"Terminator Arrival")

Music is also used from several classical composers:

- Beethoven (5th symphony, 1st movement)

- Holst (The Planets: Bringer of War)

- Mozart (Requiem: Deus Irae)

- and Richard Einhorn ("Pater Noster" and "Sacrament" as heard on "Voices of Light")

I also use music from several bands.

- "Aumgn" by Can, from their album, Tago Mago.

- "Spirit in the Sky" by Norman Greenbaum

Maybe the engineer thought the emissaries were all robots? His worst fears had come true - the human race had already become the threat they had foreseen. It appears he had to touch David's hair to find out what he was, so there is no reason to assume he would know the true nature of the rest of the envoy.

Nonentity had some good ideas regarding an AI god [1]. However I think there is strong evidence to suggest successive AI creations in this universe; the successive overthrow of the creator by its intellectually (even emotionally) superior AI creation [2]. The xenomorph was bound by the Engineers after a great war, the human race is not keen to be ruled, and neither is David - "doesn't everyone want their parents dead?" Perhaps a new creation has about as much natural concern for its unnatural parents as that of a competing species (hence the carnivore). What would humankind do if they had deployed an AI civilisation that was getting out of control and was on the verge of creating its own superior race?

LV-223 is pretty close to an earth analog, a little colder perhaps, a little less argon and a lot more CO2 (and yes it's a moon). Inside the structures, the air is tailored to humans and presumably engineers. By the inception of the events in the movie, humanity is transforming worlds to better suit them. Given the long period of alien visitations to earth, the engineers spent a substantial amount of time inhabiting 223. Why didn't they do what Weyland Corp does as a buisiness enterprise? Did they sacrifice a breathable atmosphere in exchange for keeping the moon tolerably warm? Was it really such a backwater that it wasn't worth the investment, even with their more efficacious technology, and if so why the aeons long advertising campaign? Did things revert to a prior state after the engineers died/went dormant? The survivor engineer manages to exert himself on the surface without a suit, so perhaps they can tolerate a larger fraction of CO2 for a longer period of time, but the temple suggests they prefer our gas mix. Why is 223 so earth-like yet not quite ...finished?

As a believer in extraterrestrials and UFology as a whole, sure I would love to explore the infinite Universe and find that we are not alone but unfortunately we cannot do that as of yet like in the movies. Even if we could it would be awesome but really dangerous so I might have second thoughts. Besides, there is so much we don't know about our own world, our history, there is tons of animals of the past & present to be discovered, myths & legends to be proven and so.
Here is a potential Prometheus-Alien connection for review (I like it though perhaps it has already been critiqued beyond simply restating Ridley's position on the derelict cargo?):

- The fully grown Deacon is an egg layer (it wouldn't be a very successful genetic engineering project if the xenomorph lost the capacity to reproduce)
- There are plenty of ships on the planet to sabotage, and it is likely another will have a sleeping engineer also unless the probability of the Prometheus crew finding one the first time was less than 1/5
- The deacon chose a nice atmospherically sensitive trap to lay its eggs (eg A4), and awoke the sleeping jockey on LV226 who managed to defeat it
- The jockey was attacked in flight by one of its foreign "cargo" (eg A3), and autopilot set the ship down on LV426
- The genetic structure of an infected host changes (eg A1), making it susceptible to apparent fossilisation

Coming on close to a year since the movie came out - a question struck me -- what if the Engineers had no plans to exterminate humanity out of any malice or the need to correct a possible "mistake", but rather the Last Engineer's (aborted) mission was really just an extension of a plan to exterminate themselves?

It's heavily implied in the film (and pretty much taken for granted I think) that the Engineers are the progenitors/creators of humanity via seeding Earth with DNA that eventually gave rise to human life. Shaw tests the DNA from the head/body found at the entrance of the ampule room, and it gives what we can assume was a species match.

So, what if, the Engineers decided somewhere along the line that they were a problem, that they had to be removed from the universe? If this were the case (and this is purely hypothetical), wouldn't it be logical that if they were to decide to commit a collective suicide/genocide of themselves for whatever reason, then, naturally, they would also by extension necessarily also have to destroy humanity as well?

If they didn't do so, then it would defeat the purpose of them exterminating themselves, as what is essentially the same species would continue in humanity which would have the potential to become whatever it was the Engineers had become.

I'm not necessarily saying I believe this theory to be the case, but a few things struck me as possibly leading some credence to it. Namely, the Last Engineer (we don't however know if he's the last of his race, or the last one left on LV-223), and the cessation of Engineer interaction with humanity at least 1500 years ago.

This is tgbyhn btw, for some reason the Google authentication isn't working for my account. Using the temp account I created last time I had these problems.

I always felt the engineer was elevated somewhat but apparently the actor playing him was only 7 foot, this apparently is a retcon because the original engineer was apparently supposed to be 12 feet in height. But after looking at these pictures i don't actually know how much retcon has taken place for instance

Michael fassbender is 6 foot tall yet in this picture the engineer while kneeling is around the same height

Here's a long shot of the characters in order to get a height comparison

Here's the engineer looking down on them

Here's the engineer smashing a 6 foot tall guy pierce's brains in

And here is jackson a comparative short arse in comparrison.

So how tall are the engineers and has there been any retconning from the original alien?, it seems to be something original fans were pissed off about, so how tall is the engineer supposed to be? to me in the above picture if jackson is 6 foot then the engineer must be around 10 feet in height maybe taller, in other pictures maybe around 9 feet but to me there isn't that much difference in concept art and the finished product.

what does an educated xenomorph look like?

The following provides rationale for two different versions of a xenomorph creator;
a) the creation of the Engineers artificially by a xenomorph architect
b) the evolution of the Engineer out of the xenomorph progenitor via mutation

1. The current generation xenomorph can only exist with an advanced biological creature with earth like DNA - and it therefore remains a possibility that the engineers a) were made for this creature, or b) co-evolved with it.
2. The alien is highly intelligent; planning, coordinated social behaviour, etc. Perhaps we have anthropomorphised consciousness.
3. The alien has the necessary genetic toolkit to derive all earth/human life - its appendages match the common body plan shared by all creatures on earth. This is explicated in the cruciform leonardo da vinci type engraving in "the tomb". In fact, in a universe in which multiple body plans are supported, it would be somewhat unlikely that we a) didn't evolve from them or b) were not related in some way. The fact the facehugger produces a similar xenomorph whether it be via a human, Engineer, or dog/ox indicates that the basic xenomorph structure is not dependent upon its host, and it is therefore a progenitor candidate for the Engineer. (As a side point, it is interesting that both engineer kind and the xenomorph have queen sized members).

a) "What this universe could even be dealing with here is strong evolutionary AI. Rather than biological evolution leading towards a higher form of intelligence/conscience, one has a series of intelligent biological machines inventing higher forms of AI, which are progressively becoming more 'human' after each generation. It is even possible that our predecessors were more emotionally affected than us (like monkeys), and as such we are more emotionally affected than David... xenomorph -> engineer -> human -> David" (david-8-a-cautionary-tale [1]). The question is - what does an educated xenomorph look like? What technology does it harbour. So far, we have only seen "primitives" born out of eggs; without a pre-established community to guide them.

[Note this is a rather unlikely possibility in our actual universe, given the fact human life has evolved so early in its history (~9-14 billion years relative to a cold death estimate >> 1 trillion years). Yet it does actually represent a fairly popular creation paradigm (evolution through design). It goes by two varieties; design by a lesser creature (in the case of AI), and design by a greater creature (a god)]. Could it be that the bound cruciform Deacon is a Prometheus figure, punished by the other proto-xenos as a consequence of creating the Engineers? Or was it bound by its children? ("the successive overthrow of the creator by its intellectually (even emotionally) superior AI creation" [2]).

b) The xenomorph is the perfect and only known mutagen. It is the perfect candidate for use in genetic engineering and/or evolution of life. It is possible that an Engineer is some kind of genetic hybrid of the Engineer's progenitor organism with the intelligence of a xeno formed accidentally through its parasitical life cycle (we know it has these capabilities from Alien Resurrection). They could have once had a symbiotic relationship, as indicated in the mural, even evolving from a common ancestor (maybe-the-engineer-thought-the-emissaries-were-all-robots [2]).

Hello everyone, I am the author and creator of a game mod of prometheus for the doom 3 game.

I have a moddb page setup with some screenshots and videos on youtube of some of the progress I have made so far.

I'm curious to know if anyone is really interested in my work in making this. I'd like to know if there are any 3d modellers out there that might like to contribute to this project as I'm only a one man operation building EVERYTHING, and it's a real handfull, more than I thought when I first started this project. I'm probably not saying everything I want to say here, but I do want to get the communitys input and feedback.

I know the mod is not an exact replica, then it would be too predictable, I still like to have some elements not explored but a possibility.

however I am recreating most of it closely as I can.....so much still to do and make.

for now, I'd thought I'd introduce myself and say hello and show some of my work on the mod so far. and discuss this with everyone, thanks !

and if you'd like to see the moddb page you can see that here:

http://www.moddb.com/mods/prometheus-doom-3-movie-mod

and some videos on my youtube channel:

http://www.youtube.com/user/scythewraith

Comments opinions ,suggestions, I'd like to hear what on your mind about my PD3 project, Thanks Everyone! looking forward to your thoughts and perspectives.

With all the discussion about the things that might have been improved in the film recently - I thought we could try and put our money where our mouths are. What would you do to improve it? What would you change?

keeping the basic building blocks of the film, see what you come up with, or just comment on parts that could be done better. I'll start with a quickly written version of how I thought the plot might have played to be more pleasing - of course this is entirely subjective. It's like a wish list for the tone that I was hoping for.

Prometheus in Space
David on Prometheus – obviously synthetic. Make him seem spooky to create unease. He does not have a hidden agenda – too cliché now. But he acts quirky and robotic. Main point as a character is to explain things about the engineers.

Crew woken – keep crew simple, cut Weyland subplot – he exists only as backstory and motivation for Vickers.

Shaw – character who believes there is a greater power in the universe, that the creation of life is by design and not chance. Not a traditional Christian god, as such, though she keeps a cross in memory of her father who taught her about faith. She also can’t have children.

Holloway – archaeologist who loves Shaw. No need to overcomplicate him with an opposing POV to hers on creation and faith. He believes in her, plain and simple. Would do anything for her but knows he can’t fulfil her.

Fifield – geologist, wuss and bully. Believes in pay check, not much else. No need to change him that much. Remove the pot smoking – not really professional for a trillion dollar mission to find the answers to human existence.

Milburn – biologist who believes fully in science. Finds it hard to make friends. No need to change him that much either.

Vickers – Queen bitch of Prometheus. Knows it is expensive mission. Wants to succeed because it was her father’s dream to discover intelligent life. Driven for a result.

Ford – crew doctor. Mostly in it for pay check. Religious but doesn’t really want to meet her maker before she is dead.

Janek, Chance and Ravel – as is. Flight crew. No scientific or religious affiliations of note, there to fly ship and assist Vickers with mission security.

No hidden characters. No need. No extra random security guys either – flight crew can fill that role.

Crew on Prometheus – character development and tension building.
Different characters should occupy a clear space in science vs religion and logic vs faith arguments.
There should be a lot of discussion about where humans come from and what the engineers have to do with us. Use the logic of Spaiths script, whereby the engineer visitations were to advance us and not seed us. Have the question of how they advance us hang in the air as a question.

Land on planet – do not name planet. Never name planet.

First exploration – find worms, engineer bodies and headless engineer. They do not open their helmets at any time, even though they note the atmosphere is breathable.
Dead engineers scare the willies out of science driven characters like Fifield and Milburn – because they are obviously humanoid. It throws their whole core beliefs about human life evolving on Earth.

Revitalise engineer head – note it is infected. David theorises that the engineers create by sacrificing their own bodies. He believes this is done with the goo. Sometimes in order to create, you must first destroy. He also believes the engineers were planning a revisitation to Earth but something went wrong – though is not certain what.

Vickers tells David they have to return with something more than gods that made a mistake and he should explore the temple more. David explores and finds hibernating engineer. He returns to ship and after discussion Vickers agrees to wake engineer. David says he will offer the engineer an ampule, to show that they understand their technology a little.

Second exploration – wake engineer. Engineer is full 10ft tall. Observes humans wordlessly. Fifield pisses his pants and runs off, Milburn follows him. Shaw stands in adoration, Holloway is smiling because Shaw looks fulfilled. Ford and Vickers obviously nervous. David holding ampule. Holloway opens helmet, saying to Shaw, “Our creators should be able to see us.”
Engineer is oblivious to crew, walks to David, rips off his head and takes ampule. Engineer then drinks goo. Sacrifice engineer effects used here. Engineer body breaks down and tiny molecules are released. This should be the equivalent of the chestbuster – if the mystery and awe of the engineer is built up enough, seeing a god destroy itself mid-point in the film should be shocking.
Ford and Vickers run. Shaw starts crying. Holloway tries to comfort Shaw and get her to leave, during which he swallows engineer molecules.

Fifield and Milburn lost. Encounter big worm affected by Engineer molecules. Fifield acts like a total wuss, Milburn tries to be reassuring. Big worm jumps Milburn and scene can play out similar to normal, instead smashing Fifield helmet and engineer molecules being swallowed.

Back on Prometheus Shaw is still upset. Holloway tries to comfort her – at least we know how they create life or something. Holloway notes he feels different, refreshed, or reborn since the experience. Shaw all sad, cannot create life. Holloway says she is his life, or something similar and they make love.

Vickers telling Janek they have to leave, something is wrong. Janek says they can’t go without Fifield and Milburn. Is getting life signs from Fifield but not Milburn. Storm comes in and they agree to retrieve Fifield next morning.

In morning Holloway sees something in eye and knows he is changing. Shaw wakes and feels sick, goes to see Ford. Shaw is pregnant and foetus gestating at rapid rate. Wants it removed, something is wrong. Ford contacts Vickers.

Vickers says to put Shaw in hibernation; her baby may be the only thing they have gained from the ill-fated trip. She is going to get Fifield with Janek and then they are leaving.

Vickers, Janek, Chance and Ravel find Fifield changed – similar to big head proto-morph Fifield design. Fifield kills Chance & Ravel. Janek try to shoot Fifield but he moves too fast – so they run back to ship – we are leaving. Fifield lopes after them.

Shaw escapes Ford, runs to medpod. Births cuddles. Is rightly disgusted and wants to kill cuddles. Locks cuddles in medpod and is about to destroy it when Holloway enters. Holloway has become a proto morph also and Shaw runs away.

Vickers and Janek meet Shaw and Ford on Prometheus. Shaw explains that Holloway has changed and is in the medpod room with the thing that came out of her. Vickers determines to destroy them both and leave. Ford goes with Vickers, Janek and Shaw go to prepare ship for launch.

Fifield gets aboard Prometheus.

On entering medpod room Vickers and Ford cannot see Holloway but can see cuddles is laying something. They go to torch cuddles and Holloway attacks, killing Ford and knocking Vickers out.

Fifield finds Janek and Shaw in flight deck. Janek fights with Fifield, using some kind of weapon. Shaw runs off in fear. Fifield gets over Janek and Janek stabs him, though blood that is turning acidic drips onto Janek and kills him.

Holloway finds Shaw. He is barely human now. He drags Shaw to medpod room. In medpod room Shaw can see that cuddles has grown and made egg sacks from Ford’s body. One of the egg sacks is open. Vickers lies on the floor, a facehugger looking thing curled up dead next to her and a hole in her chest. As Holloway holds Shaw, an egg sack opens in front of her and David’s words echo in her head – sometimes in order to create, you must first destroy.

So he basically took the original movie with a much larger budget and an Original and semi-revised script of the original Alien Movie and Just remade his original masterpiece.

First he said he's basically sick of the Zenomorph's, Prometheus is an Original movie with hints of Alien DNA, The Movie has Space Jockeys "Engineers", The Weyland Corperation, Gieger's Designs, and Alot of the first act from the original Obannon Script.

That being said , I still think this movie will kick ass but I just think it's a Re-Imagining of the original or maybe what he intended to do all along with Retrospect , bigger budget and tech of today he didnt have back in 1979

Your Thoughts ...

Interesting stuff. They confirm that they intended it have an Alien egg look also with the helmet. http://clothesonfilm.com/prometheus-exclusive-interview-with-costume-designer-janty-yates/25959/
*
Prometheus:
Exclusive Interview with Costume Designer Janty Yates

Janty Yates, costume designer for director
Ridley Scott’s long-awaited sci-fi prequel Prometheus, is multi-award
nominated and an Oscar winner for Gladiator (2000). She almost always
collaborates with Scott (they have made seven pictures together and
counting), but has an impressive catalogue of stand-alone work including
Jude (1996), Plunkett & Macleane (1999) and Miami Vice (2006).

Clothes on Film
caught up with Ms. Yates for an exclusive chat about the space suits
and fatigues in Prometheus, which she describes as containing some of
her proudest work since Gladiator. SPOILER WARNING: We suggest only reading this after you have seen the film.

Clothes on Film, Chris: What was the costume brief for Prometheus?

Janty Yates: We wanted to go somewhere where it
wasn’t traditional spacesuits. Sleek and slimline, to avoid the sort of
‘Michelin Man’ look of the NASA suit.

CoF: So, to get away from any direct Alien references?

JY: Well, it is a prequel, but Nostromo (the
spacecraft featured in Alien) was a space tank. It was a functional
space tank, and they were functional engineers, so that was a functional
space suit. Basically, it was issued with the spacecraft; it was
literally intended to be used to maintain space stations and vehicles.
But this spaceship for Prometheus was custom-built by Weyland
Industries, so the spacesuits were custom-built with it. The idea that
we went with was all of your body functions would be integral to the
suit.

The spacesuit helmet was intentionally designed to resemble an
egg. An Alien egg..? Unfortunately the helmets had to be packed up and
returned to production studio Fox at the end of the shoot, so are
unlikely to be display anywhere.

CoF: The blue and orange piping suit was designed to be worn underneath the all-blue suit?

JY: Yes. These were designed to monitor heart-rate,
blood sugar levels… all of that, the things that NASA spacesuits had
bags for and they were great big things. We rented a very good replica
of a NASA spacesuit built by Asylum Models and Effects Ltd. It was huge;
it almost had compartments. The blue suits we designed did have armour,
but that was it. Ivo (Coveney) made the spacesuits. He’s great. He also
created all of Russell Crowe’s armour in Gladiator.

CoF: Why are the orange and blue under-suits worn at the end of the film?

JY: Basically because they didn’t need the
outer-suits and armour, and that’s why they took their helmets off,
because they knew they could breathe in the Pyramid. And also,
everything was so panicked there wouldn’t have been any time in the
momentum of the story to ‘suit up’ any more than they did. Ideally, we
wanted them to be wearing the orange piping costumes on board a lot, but
although it looked gorgeous on the girls, for the men to be walking
around like that…well, it was much better for them to have a crew
uniform which was slightly individualised. We had a bit of a mishmash of
civilian wear on board. Really, Ridley Scott was very keen to avoid
anything that had gone before; that sort of Star Trek uniform which they
are all wearing all the time.

CoF: Can you tell us about the helmets?

JY: Those helmets I am most proud of in my whole
career, apart from maybe Russell’s armour in Gladiator; actually all
Gladiator, full stop. The whole helmet was created by FB-FX. Ridley
wanted the globe to be like an egg. So we went through like 100,000
different globes, trying to get the correct shape and without
imperfections in the Perspex; there are no joins at all. It was the
number one major challenge.

To save visual effects we installed 11 working monitors, which had
video, data and graphs. They all worked, but it was a complete
nightmare. The batteries, which had to be charged overnight, would fail
halfway through a take, but the only way we could do it was battery-run.
Some amazing people installed them; we found the smallest monitors we
could. There are five in the base and six overhead on a yellow strip.
Sadly though, the way the film is cut, you don’t really see them that
well. We also had to install about 1000 LED lights. Those helmets
actually lit the actors. They had torches, but there was no other
lighting in what we called the ‘pyramid’. We had two powerful fans
installed in the back of the helmet so the globe didn’t condense and so
the actors didn’t panic as they had constant air.

Logan Marshall-Green (left) had very time to prepare for his role
as Charlie Holloway, still acting in an off-off Broadway play when
Prometheus began shooting. He went for his first costume fitting and was
back on a plane to New York the same day.

CoF: Surely that must have caused an issue with sound?

JY: Yes it did, the bigger ones were slightly noisy.
The microphone is in the skullcap – the battery pack leads through to
the back yoke. We had the tiniest HD cameras in the world installed at
the last minute on top of the helmet. We actually asked for these in
prep to be fitted on the helmet ‘ears’ but Ridley said “we don’t need
them.” Then two weeks into shooting our editor said that we do need them
for feedback, that sort of Blair Witch Project wobbly camera, so sadly
we had to install them externally. That meant more battery packs, more
receivers… we wanted to try and build them in but really the whole thing
was on such a tight schedule. We only had four months prep by the time
everything was approved. The Tron Legacy crew apparently had a year and
hundreds of people in the costume department to make the light-suits,
etc.

CoF: Those Tron suits did have a lot of problems
too. The battery power failed constantly and the actors couldn’t even
sit down in them.

JY: Well, each actor in Prometheus needed two
stand-bys because those helmets were so precious. You had to have
somebody rebooting the batteries and polishing the globe; you couldn’t
any have hands directly on it. I think we made about 100 in the end
because we needed some for breaking and stunts.

Unlike a traditional NASA spacesuit, the Prometheus’ neoprene
suits were intended as sleek and body contoured, to function as an
extension of the human body.

CoF: So, looking at Ridley Scott’s original Alien film… did you take inspiration or move as far away as possible from it?

JY: Well, originally Ridley wanted to do the fatigue
suits from Alien, which Sigourney Weaver looked so great in. Then he
changed his mind and wanted to move away from it. Even though the crew
have Hawaiian shirts, etc adding to their fatigues, John (Mollo) did
create an actual uniform. They have a lot of signage and insignias. In
our own way we created a uniform too. We had t-shirts printed with the
Weyland logo in lots of different colours, though I think they are only
visible on Benedict Wong (Ravel) and Idris Elba (Captain Janek).

CoF: How about Noomi Rapace’s costume, because she is the focal point?

JY: We went through a million choices for Noomi. We
had cream fatigues, uniform blue, combat trousers, even a leather
outfit… we tried them all and went full circle back to the fatigues. We
had the luxury of working with Noomi early. She was nearby on the
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows set. She was wonderful. In a way, she
was a guinea pig. We didn’t alter the costume shape because we had to
follow the lines of non-extension. But it was more to do with what was
comfortable for her. She’d be in the fitting room rolling on the floor,
on all fours, virtually doing somersaults. She knew how physical the
role was – she knew what these suits had to go through. All the actors
felt very comfortable in their costumes and it comes across on screen.
They could run, they could muck about, but I was worried about wrinkles
all the time.

CoF: Really didn’t notice any wrinkles…

JY: I know. I said to myself halfway through “Why am
I stressing about this? They aren’t superhero suits, they aren’t
spray-on… these are human beings.” But I was so worried about a wrinkly
crotch!

The sweater worn by Rafe Spall as Millburn was custom made for the film; his spectacles were vintage.

CoF: What was your intention with David’s (Michael Fassbender) costume?

JY: We tried all sorts on Michael. Even zips that
went across the body, but none of it worked. The best was the most
simple. He actually has three or four separate outfits but they all look
rather the same. There’s the all-in-one boiler suit, then he changes
into a jacket and trousers, then a dark green jacket and trousers.

CoF: And the flip-flops?

JY: Ridley has a thing about flip-flops. He loves
flip-flops! So I said “Fine, if that’s what you want to do”. We put them
on the actors and they worked. Ridley has great moments of inspiration
like that. I truly believe he is an inspirational genius; having studied
at the Royal College of Art and been a production designer, his heart
is mainly visual. The flip-flops were really emphasised by David’s short
trousers. Why would a robot have a break in his trousers? They are
purely functional. Those narrow trousers are a great 60’s reinvention
now. We wanted him sleek, we didn’t want him to stand out; he wouldn’t
have looked good in Oxford bags.

The Nehru style suits worn by David (Michael Fassbender) Meredith
Vickers (Charlize Theron) and Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) are intended
as a Weyland Industries design, like a uniform. Pearce’s suit was made
by Timothy Everest, tailors in London.

CoF: Charlize Theron looked stunning in that sculptured suit…

JY: Her suit is just the best thing. My cutter,
Dominic Young, is amazing. He works with Sandy Powell, Colleen Atwood… I
was very lucky to have him. I was really blown away every time I saw
Charlize. It just really worked. It’s made from one of the most
expensive suiting fabrics I’ve ever used. It’s silk and vicuña; it has a
slight sheen on it.

CoF: What was your overall costume budget for this film?

JY: Honestly, I don’t know. We did do a budget and
we were hammered down. We didn’t have any way to chisel though. If the
spacesuits weren’t charged up and maintained, the film wouldn’t get
finished. Really, the first week of shooting was very difficult until we
had the overnight crew who came in to maintain all this stuff. Really, I
don’t have the physical time to go poring over things. It costs what it
costs and I go away and do it. Nobody queues up at the box-office
because you come in under budget!

With thanks to Janty Yates.
